Well, if you're asking the amateur photogs over at camcorderinfo.com, the Canon HV20 camcorder is the best on the market for under $1000. But just barely... it's $900.
But for that money, you're getting a camera with all the bells and whistles of a $1500-$2000 camera, including the option to shoot in either standard or hi-def formats. A budget Canon HD digital camcorder? You bet. And it's about time. The HV20 is priced right and delivers a really clean hi-def picture for your hi-def television. Another advantage is that at that price, you can get Accidential Damage Protection for it on your SquareTrade warranty. The only thing is this: if you're really going in for a dv camcorder, are you really still shooting in Standard format?
Is it perfection itself? No. The zoom toggle is weird and it doesn't sit nicely in the hand when not firmly gripped (Canon's wrist strap technology is inferior), but the pictures it shoots are quality smooth. We can't help but think this isn't the last "best of" award the Canon HV20 camcorder will see.
