While One Laptop Per Child dithers, the world races onward with a new ultraportable computer popping up almost every day. Today's example actually debuted in India a while back and did rather well there, but now HCL Infosystems' MiLeap is coming to the U.S. of A. in two interesting flavors.
The $357 MiLeap X is a Linux-based wonder with 512MB RAM, 2GB flash memory, 2-in-1 card reader and a 7" LCD screen. It looks pretty similar to Intel's OLPC competitor Classmate, even down to the 915GMS chipset, thought that's not a bad thing. It's going to be small, light, and built reasonably tough. The battery life? Clocked at a not-unreasonable four hours. On the other hand, the MiLeap Y isn't any bigger, but is definitely going for something more businessy with a 800MHz Intel A110 processor, 80GB hard drive, 1GB RAM, 7"
touchscreen, built-in 1.3 megapixel webcam, 3-in-1 card reader, and a $766 price tag.
We've said it before, but 2008 is defiantly shaping up as the year when laptops go smaller and lighter and, most of all, cheaper without sacrificing too much power or ability. Make them a pretty good fit for a SquareTrade laptop warranty, which is cheaper without sacrificing anything, and even includes options like Accidental Damage coverage.
No word on a street date for these puppies as yet, but it's really just a matter of when HCL decides to build enough of them ship them over to our greedy hands.
