We're no fans of letter/digit names for cell phone models, but do you ever bet the feeling they're starting to run out of real names? Case in point, the old Ultra Editions have got a brand new bag as the Samsung Soul, an updated cell phone that badly wants to chop into the Razr's business now that Motorola seems poised to hand walking papers to their cellular division. But is America ready to abandon Star Trek flip-phoneness for Matrix sliders?
Maybe. The Soul gets on the good foot with quad-band GSM, media playback with FM radio options, and somehow squeezes a 5-megapixel camera with face detection and image stabilization into a 12.9mm phone. If that doesn't excite you, then maybe the "Magical Touch" interface on the faceplate, which changes the touchpad controls to suit the function you're using (not unlike the LG Venus), will. It's like magic!
No word on pricing yet, but it's a lock that a SquareTrade cell phone warranty will be half the price of cell phone insurance, and that's a best-case scenario across all carriers. We won't stick you with a used replacement, either. It's fixed or you land on the big payback, period. Accidental Damage coverage is available, too.
The Samsung Soul will be steppin' up next week in Barcelona and go commercial in Europe by April, so they'll probably turn it loose stateside not too long after.
