Leap Year Sales catch some decent air.

We know you're thinking an extra day in February is just The Man's way of making you put in extra hours at the office, but it's also a handy excuse for big box stores to put things on sale. 

Best Buy doesn't have much other than the Vaio/Inspiron sale from three weeks ago and a bogus "$700 Off" home theater package that requires a $200 Geek Squad buy-in to save money on a TV that's already on sale elsewhere.  Circuit City, on the other hand, has a handful of electronics deals we like... such as a Philips DVD Player (non-HD, no-Blu) going for only $30... or $50, if you're lazy and don't mail in the rebate.  They've also knocked 33% off the price of the Garmin c340 StreetPilot GPS, or there's the TomTom ONE going for $167... down eighty bucks from normal. 

CC's desktop computer bundles and laptop sales are pretty joke-worthy ($30 off a $1000+ comput er just doesn't do it for us), but they are offering free 1GB memory cards with certain digital cameras, and some truly great deals on DV camcorders.  We particularly like the $270 they chopped from the price of the Canon HV20 HD Camcorder, putting it down to $730.  Not bad for a best-in-class device. And that's how you discount something.

Speaking of which, you can get 20% Off your SquareTrade warranty for any of these things (or anything else) from now through March 2nd... and that's on prices that were already about half what Circuit City would charge you.  That includes Accidental Damage coverage, too, if you want it.

iPod Valentine's Sales Abound.

Ye Gods.  If we're to believe all the Valentine's sales going around, women apparently want crappy movies like Across the Universe and Failure to Launch, and lots of perfectly good electronics that are all painted pink.  If we pulled something like that, we'd end up sleeping on the couch.

However, there's a bunch of normally-colored stuff on sale all over.  Circuit City's fairly lame iPod sale prices from way, way back are still largely in place, though saving five bucks does equal five more songs off iTunes.  The biggest deal to be had at the moment, and it's live at Amazon and Circuit City and Best Buy, is a $25 off deal on the recently released 32 GB Apple iPod Touch.  Amazon's prices on all other iPod tends to be a few bucks better than CC and BB's, too.

We've heard the Apple iPod Touch isn't doing so well, sales-wise, and we're not terribly surprised.  C'mon now, it's basically an iPhone without the phone (or, admittedly, two unending years of constant AT&T hassle), but it still costs the same... or more, depending on how which model you're buying.  It's really just a matter of what you want out of your mobile devices, and if you want a top-end iPod to watch widescreen movies on while calling you buddies over Verison's network on a Nokia, then the iTouch really is your thing.

Best Buy's late HDTV sale.

Well, it's nice to see that Best Buy is finally getting in the game. 

A quick peek at their Midwinter Sale page - specifically, the 'too late to make it into the flyers!" page - and you'll find about a dozen LCD and Plasma HDTVs on sale in an attempt to one-up Circuit City's more robust sale.  The Best Buy sale has the benefit of including a few Plasmas - like $400 off the Panasonic 50" 1080p Flat-Panel Plasma HDTV - which Circuit City does not.  However, you won't find a discount much over $500 here... though that does put a good Toshiba 1080p 47" LCD down to a very affordable $1500. 

Also very affordable: a SquareTrade HDTV warranty, which is thirty bucks cheaper on that Toshiba than Best Buy's warranty (and better reviewed, too), and that's before you use Coupon Code SUPERBOWL to knock 33% Off your warranty's price.  Assuming you use it on or before February 3rd.

Despite all this, we still can't help but feel Best Buy's holding back, though we're not quite sure what for.  Are they really expecting people to panic-buy an HDTV mere days before the big game?  And of course, their lack of a free autographed football could be a deal-breaker.
