Gaming Setup: A Non-Gamer’s Guide to Living with a Gamer

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Great relationships are built upon love, trust, mutual interests – and knowing how to deal with videogames. You see, as a woman in my 30s, I am not doing backflips at the prospect of staring at a screen for hours on end while my hubby plays Fortnite or Call of Duty. That means I spend A LOT of time watching my husband venture off into the gaming world.

As a result, I know way too much about video games. Hey, it’s a cool skill to have and now I can help you with a Guide to Living with a Gamer.

Always Keep a Good Router On Hand

The latest and most popular videogames are all online. As a result, you will need Internet access (perfect for browsing on your phone while pretending to watch your hubby play), and a reliable router. Picking up the Netgear Nighthawk X4S is a great choice for routers. If it sounds kinda nerdy to you — you’re not wrong ( it’s meant for gamers.)

This router promises lag-free gaming and makes a great addition to any gaming setup. Fortunately, this means my hubby suffers less ‘lag deaths’ – which is a great way to avoid temper tantrums. The Nighthawk X4S costs just over two hundred bucks. For the price, protecting it with an insurance plan is a great idea especially if it helps the gamer in your life with uninterrupted game time.

Get Them a Gaming Headset

Are you skipping out on gaming night? Get them a gaming headset, they won’t even know you’re gone! No, seriously – it’s a double-edged sword at times. Gaming headsets let them chat with their ‘friends’ in multiplayer games as they strategize all sorts of cool ways to blow each other up.

The SteelSeries Arctis 7 works with every major gaming console and PC. Also, the DTS Premium 7.1 surround sound means your significant other will be completely oblivious as you go on your shopping spree with their credit card.

No Gaming Setup is Complete Without a Charging Station

Eventually, your loved one (and fellow gaming buddies) will converge on the couch for a good ‘ole fashioned marathon of couch co-op games. When this happens, be prepared with an Xbox charging station or a PS4 charging station. Without them, you will be hearing about it in surround sound. These charging stations are capable of charging their controllers more quickly than the factory alternatives.

Make the Best of It

Ultimately, even if gaming is not your thing – you should make the best of it and embrace your partner’s hobbies. Kind of like how they may watch all your favorite Real Housewives even if they don’t want to. You can always make it a little easier to enjoy their gaming hobby by finding a game you like and genuinely give it a shot. Who knows, you might end up becoming a gamer yourself!
