Unveiling the New iPhone XS, XR, and XS Max

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Dating back to 2012, September is traditionally the time when Apple reveals their latest iPhone–with pre-ordering available just days after the official announcement (tonight at midnight). So, this fall, what next-level features can an iPhone fanatic look forward to from the company that finally achieved its so-called “Mission: Impossible”– 2 billion iOS devices shipped? Hot on the heels of Apple’s September 2018 Keynote event, here’s our first look at what to anticipate from the iPhone XS, XR, and XS Max:

Battery Life
Do you prioritize practicality over slick new features? Then you’ll be happy to hear that Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior VP of worldwide marketing promises you’ll get an extra 30 minutes of battery life out of the new iPhone XS (compared to the iPhone X) before you’ll have to scramble for a charger. The new XS Max will deliver a notable hour and a half more juice than the iPhone X, and the iPhone XR will reportedly last an hour and a half longer than the iPhone 8 – via CNET.

Camera
Easily one of the most exciting advancements with the new iPhones is the use of Smart HDR. Now you can select from improved shots with a total of nine simultaneous photos taken and stitched together (using different exposure settings) instead of four. You’ll also be able to adjust your image’s depth of field after you’ve taken your shot, giving you more control over the photo’s focal point – via The Verge.

Colors
The iPhone XS and XS Max will both be available in three colors: Gold, White, and Space Grey. The iPhone XR boasts six color choices, including Canary Yellow,(PRODUCT RED™), Blue, Black, White, and Coral. If we had to pick, we’d predict Coral as the must-have color for 2018.

Display
You can look forward to best-in-class display and color accuracy from all three models. The XS Max is the largest iPhone ever with a 6.5-inch screen with 2688 x 1242 OLED display. The XS is slightly smaller with a 5.8-inch screen with a 2436 x 1125 OLED display. According to The Verge, both phones feature a pixel density of 458 ppi. Last but not least, the XR has a 6.1-inch LCD “Liquid Retina” screen, and a pixel density of 326 ppi. Correspondingly, it clocks in at a lower pricepoint than the other models.

Processor
All three models will feature Apple’s own A12 Bionic CPU. According to MacWorld, the new Neural Engine can process “5 trillion operations per second.” That figure is somewhat staggering to imagine, so know that some of the performance benefits will include apps that launch 30 percent faster, and improved performance from apps that utilize machine learning–such as Netflix, Tinder, Snapchat, and Google Maps.
Storage
You’ll be able to configure the iPhone XS and XS Max, with 64GB, 256GB, or 512GB of storage. The iPhone XR will be available with 64GB, 128GB, or 256GB of storage – via Thrillist.

Water Resistance
As a team who’s seen our share of freak phone accidents, you can imagine how excited we get over advancements in water-resistance technology. Apparently, the clumsy among us can now accidentally submerge the XS or XS Max in up to seven feet of water for as long as 30 minutes–which is double the depth rating of the original iPhone X.
